Who We Are

The History of Altus Christian Fellowship

Altus Christian Fellowship actually finds its beginnings at the end of the 1970's. The work was started by Steve and Debbie Branson as a street ministry ministering to un-churched people and people who were drawn together for various reasons. They began their work on E. Broadway in Altus. The ministry remained at that location for a few years. It was actually known as "The Place" during those days.

In July 1980 the Branson's moved so that Steve could further his education. At this time, through a vote of the people, Dick and Opal Chapman became the leaders of "The Place"

Upon becoming the leaders the first order of business was to determine whether the work being done and to be done was to be that of a street ministry or a church. It was determined that the will of God was for the work to continue on as a Church and its emphasis of being a street ministry was to come to an end.

Because of outgrowing the house, the location was moved to a building at 717 S. Navajoe where this facility was rented. During this period part of the membership said that the work was still a street ministry and others were saying it was a Church. Regularly scheduled meetings were being conducted as a church but as of yet it was still somewhat undefined as to what its purpose was.

In July 1980 the Branson's moved so that Steve could further his education. At this time, through a vote of the people, Dick and Opal became the leaders of "The Place." Upon becoming the leaders the first order of business was to determine whether the work being done and to be done, was to be that of a street ministry or a church. It was determined that the will of God was for the work to continue on as a Church and its emphasis of being a street ministry was to come to an end.

Because of this decision the second order of business was to change the name of the work to reflect this particular decision It was believed that the name should be Altus Christian Fellowship to reflect the city of its location, to identify it as Christian in nature, and that it would be a fellowship of believers who were to carry out the will and purposes of God to which He had called them.

The name seemed to give it somewhat of a neutral position so that a good working relationship might be maintained with all denominations. As for its denominational background it would be a Non-Denominational Spirit-filled work This period can be known as the first phase of this particular work.

The second phase of the work actually began when Dick and Opal took over the work as Pastors and the Church was given the name Altus Christian Fellowship. This phase lasted from July, 1980-July, 1986. During this period the work grew from 12 members in attendance to approximately 125 in consistent attendance. In the mid 1980's the Church moved to a new location at 1020 N. Main.

In 1986 God called upon the Chapman's to leave the Church and the town of Altus and move to Claremore, Oklahoma. At that time the Church was released into the hands of Steve and Loretta Robertson. In 1987 Altus Christian Fellowship merged together with Temple of Praise, an Assembly of God Church, located on Tamarack Road. By 1990 Temple of Praise was dissolved and neither Church was in existence any longer.

In 1991 God began to deal with Dick and Opal about being sent back to Altus from the Church at Claremore where Dick had been working as an Administrator over a Christian School. The Chapman's moved back to Altus in September, 1991. Dick set up an office at the National Bank of Commerce building on the second floor since there was no Church facility. Altus Christian Fellowship actually had its first meeting on October 2, 1991 in the Chapman home at 1021 S. Navajoe. This is actually the beginning of the third phase.

The first facility that the Church moved into was at the corner of Hudson and Cypress. The first service in that location was held on January 26, 1992.
