Born in Liberal, Kansas on January 14, 1949, Darrel grew up mostly in southwest Oklahoma. He graduated High School, Tipton, Oklahoma in 1967.
Darrel served 4 years in the Air Force, from October 4, 1968 to October 3, 1972. One year of that in Viet Nam.
Darrel was saved October 1961 in revival at First Baptist Church, Tipton.
He enjoys golfing, fishing, woodwork, and watching sports.
Darrel retired from the Post Office as a Letter Carrier in January 2004, with a total of 35 years, 7 months of federal service. In 2006 he began volunteering his time, working on the Plaza Theater renovation project. In 2006, Darrel and Sandy began to serve the body as leaders of the Life Group Ministry.
He and his wife, Sandy have been married for 27 years. They have four children, Chris & Kim Barger, Chris & Daphne Smalts, John & Sabrina Deem, and Josh Smalts. They also have seven grandchildren. Darrel has four brothers, Gordon, Ron, Jerry and Stan.
On January 28, 2007 Darrel was ordained into the ministry at Altus Christian Fellowship.
